How much are visa and residence fees in Japan?
Last checked: 2026-11-07
Since October 1, 2026, changing your status of residence or extending your stay costs 10,000 to 75,000 yen at the counter, depending on the period of stay you are granted. Before that date, it cost 6,000 yen at the counter and 5,500 yen online. Permanent residence rose from 10,000 yen to 200,000 yen.
Change of status and extension fees
The same table applies to both procedures. Online applications also pay a transaction fee, and the last column adds it.
| Period of stay granted | At the counter | Online fee | Online transaction fee | Online total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months or less | 10,000 yen | 10,000 yen | 330 yen | 10,330 yen |
| Over 3 months, up to 6 months | 18,000 yen | 15,000 yen | 330 yen | 15,330 yen |
| Over 6 months, under 1 year | 25,000 yen | 21,000 yen | 330 yen | 21,330 yen |
| 1 year | 33,000 yen | 27,000 yen | 330 yen | 27,330 yen |
| Over 1 year, under 3 years | 48,000 yen | 42,000 yen | 330 yen | 42,330 yen |
| 3 years or more, under 5 years | 64,000 yen | 56,000 yen | 550 yen | 56,550 yen |
| 5 years or more | 75,000 yen | 65,000 yen | 550 yen | 65,550 yen |
Applications received by September 30, 2026 pay the old fee, even if permission comes on or after October 1.
Permanent residence
| How to apply | Before October 1, 2026 | From October 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| At the counter | 10,000 yen | 200,000 yen |
The agency's list of online procedures, dated January 5, 2026, does not include permanent residence, and its permanent residence page gives only your regional immigration office. So plan on the counter fee, and ask if you hope to apply another way. We compare this with the free naturalization application in naturalization or permanent residence.
Other online fees
The agency says these fee amounts did not change. The figures below are for online applications. At the counter, the agency's procedure page lists 4,000 yen for a single re-entry permit and 7,000 yen for a multiple one. We did not confirm the counter fee for the certificate. See when you need a re-entry permit.
| Permission | Fee | Transaction fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-entry permit, single | 3,500 yen | 220 yen | 3,720 yen |
| Re-entry permit, multiple | 6,500 yen | 220 yen | 6,720 yen |
| Certificate of authorized employment | 1,600 yen | 220 yen | 1,820 yen |
How to pay
- At the counter. Pay with revenue stamps. Buy the total shown on the postcard you receive with your result. Stamps are cash only. The agency suggests buying them in advance at a large post office, because shops inside immigration offices have limited stock.
- Online. Pay by convenience store or bank payment. Credit cards, QR code payments and revenue stamps are not accepted. Some convenience stores cannot take the payment.
- Watch for fake messages. The agency says payment notices come only from addresses ending @service-dgft.com, and completion notices from @veritrans.jp.
When to apply
- Extension. Apply on or before the day your stay expires. If your current stay is 6 months or longer, you can apply from 3 months before it ends.
- Change of status. Apply when the reason arises, and no later than the day your stay expires.
- Where. Go to the regional immigration office for your address, or apply online. The Immigration Information Center is on 0570-013904.
Reduced fees
A reduced fee of 10,000 yen applies to a change of status or extension, and 20,000 yen to permanent residence, for some people. The agency's Q and A says you must meet two conditions together: hardship comparable to people eligible for public assistance, and a humanitarian need to stay in Japan. For permanent residence, the reduction is limited to spouses or children of Japanese nationals, permanent residents or special permanent residents. You must apply at the counter, because the online system does not support it.
Residence card fees
A specified residence card is a residence card with My Number Card functions. The agency lists a fee of 1,900 yen, plus 600 yen for J-LIS, the body that handles the My Number functions, or 800 yen with an electronic certificate. The J-LIS notice shows that 800 yen is 600 yen plus 200 yen for the certificate. If a city office arranges direct delivery, the agency fee is 2,600 yen instead of 1,900 yen. In many cases no fee applies, including your first procedure on or after June 14, 2026 if your card was issued by June 13, 2026. The application cannot be made online. Check the rules for your case, because the page has exceptions. We compare it with a separate card in our My Number Card guide.
What we could not confirm
- Ordinary residence card. We found no official fee for a standard residence card in these pages.
This page is general information, not legal advice. For your own case, ask your regional immigration office. We read these fees on November 6, 2026, and rechecked them against the agency's pages on November 7, 2026.
